The composition actually consists of three movements. The first movement is 30 seconds of silence, the second is 2 minutes and 23 seconds of silence, and the final movement is another minute and 40 seconds of more silence. John Cage is known as an avant-garde composer and artist, and this 1952 composition, his most controversial piece, was influenced by his studies of Zen Buddhism in the 1940’s and 50’s. 4’33” allows the audience to listen to the ambient sounds of their environment for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. It can (obviously) be performed on any instrument, but here’s an example of it on the piano.
